I have been wanting to create a painting of this area for quite some time now, even though I wasn't quite sure how to approach it due to the different levels and angles. And, of course the stairs! For some reason, I always find stairs somewhat intimidating to draw, and naturally there are an abundance of stairs in my subjects, since I tend to focus on the beauty of Italy.
As I have mentioned previously, I have been playing with an abundance of broken lines this year as part of an attempt to develop texture. So far, especially with the help of the seppia-colored ink and the open line-work, I have been able to breathe more life into my artwork — while simultaneously adding in more detail.
This piece is entitled La Panda Blu - I after the little blue car in the bottom corner of the painting. This little car, which has long been discontinued by Fiat, is the consummate Italian workhorse. It can go practically anywhere, due not only to its small size, but also because it has four-wheel drive (almost like a four-wheel drive Volkswagon Rabbit). Even though it is difficult to tell, this little car also has a hitch for a small trailer, making it even more valuable for driving around the villages and carrying goods into the woods if need be.
I am pleased to be able to share this little taste of Italia, along with another view into the hidden nooks of my little village that feels so much like home. To me, there is nothing more magical than walking around the village, looking at what is in bloom, and saying "hi" to whomever might pass by.
Yours in inspiration,
Michael Weaver
