Il Campanile - II

giovedì, 2 gennaio 2025

As its name suggests, Il Campanile - II is my second piece of art that focuses on the bell tower located in Pari, Italia. In keeping with my previous piece and determination to experiment with different techniques, I chose to stick with the black India ink. Instead of sketch paper, or the smooth Bristol board, however, I chose to use a sheet of ultra-bright 220 g/m2 Architetto brand paper (24x33cm) that I originally purchased in Italia.

While last year (2024) I primarily focused upon creating thin, straight, unbroken lines for structure, this year I am determined to work on texture as well. I intentionally worked with broken lines throughout this piece, both to create a sense of form in the trees and plants, as well as a sense of texture for the bell tower, back of the church (chiesa) and the surrounding buildings. I also did away with all but the barest minimum of pencil lines before beginning my process of inking.

One other thing that I feel is important to note, especially in comparison to last year, is the type of ink that I am using, even for my blackwork. Most of the work that I created in the first half of 2024 used Micron pens of varying widths and colors (black and sepia). In the second half of 2024 I began to use India ink with a metal nib and sepia ink exclusively.

This, however, is the first piece that I created using black India ink with the metal mapping nib. My goal here was primarily to create a sense of texture using a variety of broken lines of different shapes.

Yours in inspiration,
Michael Weaver
